Reasons Why Dogs Are Better Than Cats

Dogs surpass cats, and we’re unapologetic about it. While this is a subjective topic, we have plenty of reasons to support our view, so if you disagree, feel free to move on.

Dogs have consistently demonstrated their unwavering loyalty and protective nature, making them mankind’s most devoted companions. Cats have their merits, but we believe these ten reasons will clearly show why dogs are better than cats.

What Makes Dogs Superior to Cats?

You probably already have your own reasons why dogs are superior to cats, but here are a few of the most apparent ones. This list isn’t exhaustive, but it covers some key points:

Dogs Are More Loyal Than Cats

Dogs excel in loyalty compared to cats. Dogs, being pack animals, view their owners as leaders and exhibit unwavering loyalty towards them. They prioritize protecting their pack and are willing to sacrifice themselves if necessary. In contrast, cats are more independent and solitary creatures. While some cats can form strong bonds and show affection, many tend to be aloof. If you seek a companion who eagerly greets you upon returning home, a dog is likely the better choice. Cats may show interest primarily when food is involved, rather than for companionship.

Dogs Protect Their Owners

Dogs are inherently protective of their owners, which is why they are often used as guard animals. Even the most easygoing dogs can become fiercely protective when needed, willing to take action to ensure their owners’ safety. In a home invasion scenario, for instance, a dog might bark, growl, or even confront the intruder, potentially saving lives. Cats, on the other hand, are not known for their protective instincts; their reputation as “scaredy cats” reflects their cautious nature. It’s essential to understand and manage this protective instinct, especially in breeds known for their guarding tendencies, through proper socialization.

Dogs Are More Social Than Cats

Dogs are social animals that enjoy interaction with humans and other dogs, seeking companionship and closeness. In contrast, cats are more solitary, often displaying indifference or annoyance towards humans, and typically do not greet with affectionate gestures like licking faces.

Dogs Are Trainable

Dogs are highly trainable animals capable of learning a variety of commands and tasks, from basic obedience to complex roles like assisting people with disabilities. They thrive on training and can develop into well-behaved companions. In contrast, cats are independent and generally difficult to train, often not responding to commands or learning tricks beyond their instinctual behaviors.

Dogs Have Therapeutic Qualities and Can Serve As Certified Service Animals.

Dogs have a proven therapeutic impact on humans, widely recognized for their roles as emotional support animals (ESAs) and trained service animals. While cats can also offer comfort as ESAs, dogs remain the more popular choice and are legally recognized as service animals under the ADA. They can be trained to perform essential tasks as psychiatric service animals, which is not possible for cats. Beyond their formal roles, dogs are instinctively attuned to their owners’ emotions, providing comfort, companionship, and emotional support, especially beneficial for individuals dealing with mental health challenges. In contrast, while cats can be affectionate on their terms, they cannot offer the structured support that dogs provide.

Dogs Encourage Physical Activity, Making Them a Healthier Choice for Lifestyle Than Cats

Dogs thoroughly enjoy outdoor activities like walks, playing fetch, and swimming. They’re also eager to join you for car rides or any other plans you have. Having such a ready and willing companion adds to the joy of spontaneous adventures. Dogs’ enthusiasm for physical activity contributes positively to their owners’ overall health and well-being.

Are We Making a Case for Dogs Over Cats Here?

Dogs excel where cats fall short. They’re more loyal, protective, social, trainable, and therapeutic. This isn’t to say cats aren’t wonderful pets, but when deciding between the two, dogs clearly come out on top. If you’re thinking about adding a pet to your family, choosing a dog is a choice you’ll be glad you made! And remember, adopt don’t shop!
