We know our dogs love us unconditionally, but how can we best show our love in return? Even with a busy schedule, there are small but meaningful ways to express your affection. Here are a few simple actions to show your dog you care.
One of the most effective ways to show your dog love is by establishing a consistent daily routine. Knowing when it’s time for meals, play, walks, and relaxation helps your dog feel secure and happy.
Dogs, like us, thrive on routine. A predictable schedule of activities enriches their life and makes them feel safe. You don’t need to spend six hours a day playing with your dog; just include regular, enjoyable activities. These small daily actions can prevent boredom and reduce problem behaviors.
Daily walks provide more than just physical exercise—they’re crucial for your dog’s mental well-being too. Walks are your dog’s chance to explore the world and engage their senses. Letting them sniff around provides additional mental stimulation and enrichment.
Incorporate “sniff breaks” into your walks. Give your dog a cue like “go sniff” and let them explore, then use a cue like “let’s go” when it’s time to move on. To keep things interesting, vary your walking route and pace occasionally.
Playing with your dog daily is a fantastic way to bond. Playtime also reduces stress, provides mental and physical exercise, and can mitigate problem behaviors by keeping your dog entertained.
You don’t need long play sessions—a five-minute game of tug or a quick round with a flirt pole can be very effective. These short, intense play sessions are a great way to break up the day and keep your dog stimulated. Try mentally stimulating games like:
Praise is an essential part of maintaining a routine and encouraging good behavior. Always praise your dog for behaviors you appreciate, no matter how small. Positive reinforcement helps your dog understand what is expected and valued.
For example, my dog knows that when I sit at my desk, it’s time for her to relax until our afternoon walk. This behavior developed over time through consistent praise for relaxing while I work.
Praise your dog every time they come when called, even if they already know the command. Continuous positive reinforcement ensures your dog remains responsive and engaged.
Every dog is unique, so it’s important to respect and accept their individual personality and boundaries.
One of the best training tips I’ve learned is to “train the dog in front of you.” Similarly, adapt your expectations to your dog’s personality. Some dogs are very social, while others are more reserved. Proper socialization is important, but recognize that some dogs have a smaller social battery.
Not all dogs are cuddlers, which can be disappointing if you wanted a snuggle buddy. If your dog prefers sleeping alone, you can work on desensitizing them to your presence with treats and positive reinforcement, but understand they may always prefer their space.
Instead of comparing your current dog to past pets, focus on their individual needs and preferences. Accept them for who they are. Just as they love us unconditionally, it’s only fair we do the same for them.
Showing love to your dog doesn’t have to be complicated or time-consuming. By maintaining a routine, ensuring daily walks, incorporating quick play sessions, keeping up with praise, and accepting your dog’s unique personality, you can enrich their life and strengthen your bond. These small but meaningful actions will let your dog know just how much you care, ensuring they lead a happy and fulfilling life.
